Prime Alture, Pavia
Prime Alture is a splendid wine resort set amid the lush vineyards of Oltrepò Pavese, one of Italy’s largest wine-producing districts, about 50 km south of Milan. The property’s design beautifully incorporates the charm of the region and gorgeous elements that invoke the contentment found in life’s simple things, resulting in a hotel with a strong sense of place. Highlights include a large panoramic lounge located in the estate’s ancient barn, a wonderful terrace, and a wine tasting space that looks into the cellar and the barrels.
Morning walks through the vineyards and the woods make an excellent start to the day at the estate. What’s more, the resort offers a series of restorative facilities, such as a fabulous salt-water pool surrounded by flowering gardens and a spa complete with sauna, Turkish bath and multi-sensory shower. There is also a golf club nearby where golf lovers can practice their swing.
Throughout the day, on-site wine tours and tastings give a fascinating insight into the activities carried out at the estate, which comprises 80 hectares of vineyards cultivated with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot, Moscato, and Croatina grapes, and produces some 40,000 bottles annually.
Food & Drink
Traditional local cuisine is at the heart of Prime Alture, expertly matched with the resort’s fine wines. The menu is seasonal and has a zero-mile approach, with most of the ingredients coming from the estate’s grounds and a trustworthy network of local suppliers.
Food is served on the terrace or in the barn. There is also an informal outdoor space immersed in the vineyards with a grill and a large communal table where guests can dine the old-fashion way in warm weather. Breakfast is Italian-style and consists of sweet and savoury fresh products.
Rooms
Six cosy and spacious rooms are available, all decorated and named after a wine: the elegant Pinot Noir; the unique lighting system of the Chardonnay; the French-style pieces of the Merlot; the seductive red tones of the Cabernet; the soothing vibes of the Moscato and Malvasia.
The design is rustic-chic, with most rooms boasting splendid original cotto flooring. All have lovely views on the gardens and the outdoor pool, with in-room amenities including a tea and coffee corner, free wi-fi, pool towels, and a wine bar that can be filled with the resort’s blends upon request.

Points of View
Staying in Pavia
Big thinkers and innovative ideas roam here between the loggia and the Cortile delle Magnolie within the University founded in 1361 by Emperor Carlo IV. From Sant’Agostino to Federico Barbarossa, from Einstein to Alessandro Volta, Pavia has seen incredible people. Unmissable is the Certosa, not far from Prime Alture.
But Oltrepò Pavese deserves a visit not only for its history but for the pastel-coloured landscape, the great wines, the generous food.
