As Janelas Verdes

An intimate 29-room boutique hotel close to the river in Lisbon’s Santos design district. It’s housed inside an 18th-century residence near the National Museum of Ancient Art, with a panoramic terrace and a delightful inner courtyard.

As Janelas Verdes is a small boutique hotel full of charm set in an 18th-century townhouse formerly inhabited by Portuguese writer José Maria Eça de Queiróz. It’s located in a picturesque street near the banks of the River Tagus in Santos, Lisbon’s design district, a convenient address to explore the capital.

Inside, a rich décor of paintings, embroidered cushions, small pieces of art, and period details combined convey a sense of warmth and homeliness that feels like arriving at a friend’s house. The communal areas include a wood-paneled library with a terrace overlooking the river and a delightful terraced garden filled with greenery, both providing lovely gathering points for reading and talking with a drink from the honesty bar.

Food & Drink

There’s no onsite restaurant, but the hotel offers 24-hour room service and an excellent breakfast of local pastries, fresh produce, and hot dishes served in the garden or in a lovely room inside.

Rooms

The 29 rooms are bathed in light and have a classic home décor that combines soft colours, thick curtains, carpets, and floral wallpaper. All are good sized and come with desks and comfy armchairs. Bathrooms are equipped with bathrobes and Molton Brown toiletries.

Staying in Lisbon

Next door to Bairro Alto and the city’s famous Ribeira market, Santos is a pretty riverside neighbourhood with tranquil streets lined with historic palaces, antique shops, and great tascas, the traditional Portuguese restaurants. It’s been long considered Lisbon’s design district for the abundance of art galleries and new conversions that characterise the area.

Every trip we take contributes to build our own life story.

A story that is a patchwork of encounters, experiences and memories made while traveling. And just like fabric scraps in a quilt, every trip we take, no matter how big or long, holds its own special place in our life and contributes to shape who we are.
