Portofino and the Cinque Terre.
Abbadia San Giorgio, Moneglia
This unique hotel dates back to 1484 when it was built by Franciscan Friars In the mid-16th century, Cardinal Clemente Dolera enlarged the monastery, adding guest quarters, an infirmary and a library said to have housed over 700 volumes. It was not until 2004 that the monastery and its double cloister were transformed into one of Liguria’s most exclusive boutique hotels.
The 8 bedrooms are generously proportioned with cool marble and terracotta floors, with a mixture of old and new which can be found in the hotel’s palatial marble bathrooms antique mirrors, and modern Jacuzzi baths.
Breakfast is served in the Sala Cenatio surrounded by the lush gardens where guests can enjoy homemade jams, cheeses, and salami, traditional Ligurian sweets, fruit crepes, and organic honey made from local ingredients and typical products of the area.
Day trips can include exploring the Italian Riviera and nearby Portofino. After exploring this lovely town, book into the famous Taverna del Marinaio, a perfect place for taking in the endlessly fascinating harborside scene.
Food & Drink
Guests start the day in style, feasting on a breakfast of luscious cakes and pastries, fantastic fruit crepes, organic marmalades made with the legendary Monterosso lemons, and a vast variety of local cheeses and cold meats.
Whilst there is not a daily dinner served, once a week during June and September, the hotel creates a special tasting menu complete with an ancient Friar’s table, a 15th-century slate fireplace, and terracotta floors, providing an amazing setting for tastings of the gastronomic specialties made in Moneglia, Portofino, Tigullio and Cinque Terre.
There is also an opportunity to learn from a local chef at the Ligurian cooking school which can be arranged with the amazing staff at the hotel.
In addition to the ‘foodie’ experiences, the hotel can arrange private yoga classes as well as a luxury massage in the privacy of your room.
Following your relaxing yoga class or massage guests can enjoy an Aperitivo served with complimentary canapes in the upper portico with splendid garden views.
Rooms
The rooms (doubles, suites, and junior suites) are located off the cloisters, which now frame the hotel’s tranquil inner gardens and each room has its own slightly different style and color scheme, with rooms named after a friar who used to live at the monastery, a lovely reminder of the hotel’s past life.
