Lumiares Hotel & Spa

The Lumiares is a five-star boutique hotel offering beautiful apartment-style rooms that feels like home. Its location atop the hill in Lisbon’s bohemian Bairro Alto neighbourhood ensures incredible views across the River Tagus and the São Jorge Castle, with the convenience of being a quick stroll away from bars, museums and monuments. 

It’s located inside an 18th-century palace converted into a characterful space where everything is designed to capture the spirit of the city. The interiors maintain some stunning original features like the grand stone staircase that greets guests upon entering the hotel.

The hotel’s petite spa offers a sauna, a steam room, and a broad range of holistic massages, beauty treatments, and facial and body rituals. For sporty types, there is also a well-equipped, 24-hour fitness area with a personal trainer available on request as well as a selection of recommended running and walking routes through the city.

Lumiares is home to a popular venue specialised in Portuguese cuisine, the Lumi Rooftop Bar & Restaurant, which serves the flavourful dishes curated by Chef Joao Silver accompanied by gorgeous panoramic views over Lisbon’s skyline. This is also a great spot for aperitivos and cocktails under the stars, while on weekends, it offers a tasty brunch.

A more informal space, the Rebel Cafè on the ground floor is where guests can enjoy drinks and tasty savoury and sweet treats throughout the day with postcard-perfect views of Lisbon’s iconic trams out the windows.

The rooms have been designed to feel like homes, with soundproof windows, a cosy living space, and a fully equipped kitchenette complete with Smeg appliances and a Nespresso coffee machine. The Penthouse apartments also have a gorgeous panoramic terrace furnished with a table and chairs. Bathrooms are decorated with contemporary Portuguese tiles and stocked with luxury toiletries by the historic Portuguese soap maker Claus Porto. 

The space inside the apartments is light and airy, with high ceilings and lots of natural light flooding in through the large windows. The neutral colour scheme of the rooms is accented by bright splashes of colours on the walls, the cushions, and the beautiful hand-woven wall tapestries by historic local brand Ferreira de Sá.

Bairro Alto is Lisbon’s vibrant neighbourhood and makes for an excellent base to explore the city. Its maze of cobbled alleyways brims with historical sights and fabulous street art, while as the sun goes down, they become a major nightlife hotspot in the city with lots of trendy bars, clubs and restaurants.
